Golden Plover, Grouse Underwings and Persalls Silks - Mike Hardings Northen Spiders Heritage Range

Friday, 4 December 2009

Mike Harding Mike Harding - Author, Radio Presenter,Comedian and Fisherman

Jointly with Mike Harding we have produced a range of Northern Spiders for fly fishermen.. These Northen Spiders  are tied using a range of unusual materials including Golden Plover and traditional materials like Persalls silks have been required to pay true homage to the traditional Northern Spider Trout & Grayling flies in Mike Harding's new fly tying book on Northen Spiders.

The North Country tradition of fly-tying and fishing has long been celebrated as a remarkably successful way of catching fish. Developed on the fast-flowing rivers of northern England, on both sides of the Pennines, soft hackle or spider flies like the Snipe and Purple and the Partridge and Orange have been traditionally used since the nineteenth century and beyond, and are just as effective in the chalk streams of Hampshire, the lochs of Connemara or even the freestone rivers of the Appalachians in the United States.

Now, Mike Harding, an experienced fly fisherman in the rivers of Yorkshire where he lives, has produced the ultimate guide for anyone who wants to tie the best North Country flies for themselves in a superb book.. Here are a hundred and forty different designs, all illustrated in full colour, from traditional designs like the Bracken Clock to his own unique variations such as the Ribble Rouser. A good number of them have never been illustrated before. In his book Mike Harding provides a witty and illuminating history of the North Country tradition; full step-by-step photographic guides to all the stages in tying every kind of fly; details of all materials required, and how to source them; and finally some advice from the benefit of his considerable experience in how to use the flies you’ve tied to catch the most fish, with the most pleasure. Alternatively purchase ready make Northern Spiders tie it or buy it.

Wednesday, 25 January 2012

The Bivisible Brown is tied entierly from hackles - no other materials other than tying thread are used. It is the combination of colours of hackles on the collar and body which produced the distinct Bi-visible effect on the Bivisible Brown. As a bushy fly the Bivisible Brown is normally fished as a dry fly on fast broken water where it floats easily riding high on the sufrace with floatant. The Bivisible Brown also makes a good dropper fly when fishing on a lake in large waves. Finally the Bivisible Brown makes a great dapping fly.As the name indicates dry flies which include Bivisible Brown are designed to float on the surface of the water. Trout dry flies types which include Bivisible Brown imitate a wide variery of flies and insects which inhabit the surface of the water. There is nothing like using dry flies and watching trout and grayling rise to the surface. To purists dry fly fishing is the true art-form of fly fishing, indeed some rivers only permit dry fly fishing. There are some dry flies (e.g. the Popper, Muddlers) which are designed to attract fish by the action of creating a surface disturbance. The flies are made from very bouyant materials (e.g, cork, ethafoam or deer hair, the latter having a generous application of floatant). A Muddler retrieved upwind of a rise can often result in a bulge in the water as the fish follows the fly.
Dry Fly Fishing Techniques With The Bivisible Brown

A dry fly like Bivisible Brown has flotant (Gink is the most popular) warmed in your hand and gently rubbed into the hackles to help Bivisible Brown float and they are usually cast singly on a trout tapered leader. A floating line is used, but with the tapered leader de-greased so that it does not glint and flash light spooking the trout

The Bivisible Brown can be used as a Dapping Fly. In Ireland, it is common to see the locals using a dapping technique on the loughs. They usually use a long rod, often as long as 17ft, a large fly reel (or alternatively a beautifully smooth-running Centrepin reel) containing strong nylon spinning line attached to about 5 yards of 'floss line'. The floss line is joined to a level leader of about 4 feet, with a hook about size 10 on to which a couple of mayflies or a Bivisible Brown have been caught at the thorax. The floss line billows out in front of the boat, and the rod is held so that the mayfly or Bivisible Brown skip enticingly across the surface of the water, as the breeze fluctuates. This seems to be an irresistible attraction to the trout, the odd salmon has been known to be can be caught with this method.

With this method live mayfly are used to dap on the surface!. Howewer we use mayfly and later in the season cranefly imitations. Alterbative in place of the natural fly, sometimes a very bushy tied fly is substituted - often of two contrasting colours (bi-visible) to assist the angler in identifying the position of the fly. The Bivisible Brown is great fun when used for dapping.

Disco Blob Bumble

The blob is mainly a stillwater pattern, and is successful from Spring through to Autumn for both Rainbow and Brown trout. The blob is often used as an attractor pattern on the top dropper of a team of flies.

These are unweighted patterns tied with fritz type materials for the body. Some patterns have small marabou tails in contrasting colours while others sport a wing of flashabou material. Colours are many and varied but sunburst orange and yellow are firm favourites on the competition scene.

They are generally fished on sinking lines and are usually positioned on the top dropper with either a lure or a nymph or both, fished beneath. Invariably blobs are fast pulling patterns although they do sometimes get taken off the surface while waiting for the other flies to sink.  Read more...

Tuesday, 17 January 2012

Sparklemet is our own version of Krystal Flash - a highly reflective corrugated winging material nut at a fraction of the cost of some manufacturers. It is a deeply fluorescent standard material with pulsating micro monofilaments, giving it unique fish catching properties. Sparklemet is a thin, flexible tinsel that gives lifelike flash and breathing action. Mix in with other fibers to enhance streamers and saltwater baitfish patterns. Flashabou has become an essential saltwater fly tying ingredient, Sparklemet gives even better price / performance than the original Flashabou.

Each package contains approximately 150 strands of 12" Flashabou fibers. It is a super strong fiber that won't matte as it swims and flows through the water, it really attracts fish. Sparklemet comes in a large range of colours including a superb luminous version to add to those deep water lures.  Read more...

Trout Dry flies including Black Magic Green Rib are an superb fly to keep in the dry fly fisherman's arsenal. Very little can match the fun of watching a trout or grayling rise and take a Black Magic Green Rib dry fly from the water surface. Indeed in some rivers like the chalk streams of Southern England dry flies like Black Magic Green Rib are the only fishing flies allowed to be used. Selecting the right fishing fly can be awkward and over the years it has almost become a minefield with thousands of variations of trout dry flies including Black Magic Green Rib available! Key is for the fly fisherman to match the hatch and identify the ideal fly before they start fishing. Careful observation shows there are often key flies like sedge or caddis, olives, or mayflies that should always be considered when hatching. If little is rising then consider fly fishing with clever flies like Klinkhammers which with their body dipping into the sub-surface and parachute sat on the surface film look like a fly emerging.  Read more...

Semper Fli Nano Silk

This collection includes all 9 colours of 12/0 Nano Silk, the complete fly tyers collection of Powersilks!

WHAT IS NANO SILK BLACK FLY TYING THREAD?

For any given thickness Nano Silk is probably the strongest fly tying thread on the planet! Put simply Nano Silk is fine enough to tie on size 32 hooks and strong enough to bend a size 6 hook in the vice! Nano Silk is available in 9 colours including Nano Silk Black and the New Nano Silk Red
A MODERN THREAD FOR THE MODERN FLY TYER

Many fly tying threads were sourced from the textile industry many years ago and have remained unchanged ever since. Many of these threads are strong enough when used with caution but are prone to snapping at the most inconvenient time (usually just before you whip finish a fly that took 15 minutes to tie!).

Nano Silk is a modern hi-tech fibre sourced by the Semper Fli team which is coloured and spooled by us to provide the modern fly tyer with a thread to meet their needs.
WHAT CAN NANO SILK BE USED FOR?

The fact is it’s really up to you... but here are a few tips and tricks from the Semper Fli team to get you started.

Extra strength means flies can be tied “tighter” with more pressure meaning more resilient flies
Thread breakage is virtually eliminated
Minimum thickness means “thread build up” is no longer an issue. Slim bodied flies are possible even with many turns of silk as Nano Silk adds virtually no bulk.
When pulled tight Nano Silk can disappear into the dressing of a fly. Check out the parachute hackles tied using Nano Silk.
No need to varnish heads! A simple whip finish can be pulled tight and won’t come undone when fished.
Multi-strand structure means thread can be split to form dubbing loops.
Nano Silk is so fine it can doubled up midway through dressing a fly to form a dubbing loop without excess build up
On complex dressings with many steps half hitches or 2 turn whip finishes can be applied without fear of losing tension or excessive build up

CAUTION!
Nano Silk is also stronger than many fly tying tools a ceramic fly tying bobbin is recommended  Read more...
