Trout Sedge or Caddis Fly Patterns

The sedges are an alternative name for Caddisflies, Mostly nocturnal, the adult sedges hide in vegetation during the hours of daylight and are hard to find. Mating takes place at dusk, either in flight or on vegetation. We often see Sedge flies skating across rivers and stillwaters through the year.

Sedge Flies Fly Fishing Techniques

When we watch sedges we see them on the surface of the water moving in bursts so we should do the same with our fishing flies. Cast single flies using tapered leaders and twitch retrieve the fly, pull it 12 to 18 inches then stop, this mimics the natural fly. Another deadly alternative rig is to suspend buzzers or diawl bach nymphs below the caddis as they are highly buoyant, we call the the banker rigs as it is so deadly. Why not go and look at out our rigs and techniques blog post for more information and our backgrounder to sedges.
