Picric Acid Dyed - Hares Mask

Picric Acid produced incredibly dyed fly tying materials, with perfect olives tinged with yellow these are amongtsh the best dyed materials available for the fly tyer.

What part to use where:

Hare Ears - for hook sizes 16-22

Hare Cheek - Medium size hook

Tying a GRHE (Gold Ribbed Hares Ear) - Use the long hairs between the ears / back of the head.

Picric Acid Dye

Picric Acid dyed products have always been adored by fly tyers for the stunning olive color produced once materials have been dyed in the solution. However conserns over the Picric in crystal form have introduced misconceptions over this amazing dye. By working with professional chemists Semperfli have developed a safe Picric Acid solution.

PLEASE NOTE: All dyed products are washed after dying prior to drying, some colour transfer is normal but not dangerous.

absolutely stunning, the shades and colours and the way they change when wet are so close to most of the nymphs and bugs in the river

Hares Mask

First off the service was great and my order arrived quicker than expected.
At first glance the Picrid Acid Dyed Mask was far more yellow than I expected as I was looking for a more Olive colour. After I did some research it appears that the colouration of the original pelt will determine the outcome, the more white the fur, the more yellow it will be after treatment, the more grey the more olive the outcome. I blend my own dubbing so I already had a natural mask and dark olive hares ears and by clipping section from all in colour batches and blending them I ended up with eight bags of variations of olive, from creamy to dark olive dubbing.

My only moan, and reason for 4 stars, would be is that the processor should take more care when drying the mask, the ears need to be flat when dry so later you can harvest all those short guard hairs so essential for GRHE nymphs that come from the ears.

Picric Myth
Wednesday, 23 October 2013  |

Thankfully I have no need to fork out for materials dyed with this mystical but in my opinion outdated substance. There IS a far better, easy to use, safer, organic
and more attractive alternative. It's a secret though!

Hi Robert, just thought I'd reply to your review. We have used organic onions skins also to get olive dyes. Picric is perfectly safe when laboratory prepared as ours is, we have the full documentation and COSE health and safety info if you want it, once we have treated materials they are perfect and safe. It used to be unsafe as people used raw crystals which were explosive and indeed used for firing cannons so definitely were dangerous in that form which is very old hat indeed. Modern production techniques with picric are much better.
