March Wet Fly Collection for Rivers
To acompany our Hatch Chart we have compiled a collection of 18 Wet flies which should be perfect for fishing Rivers in March around the United Kingdom.
Matching the hatch is crucial to a successful days fishing, so most days start with one question 'Which fly should I use?' For many anglers this is answered either by experience or guesswork often based on what has worked previously or something you heard from another angler that worked for them.
Large Dark Olives can be seen accross the UK on Straems and Rivers year round, however we find it most useful to fish in the Spring. This is because it is one of the earliest flies to appearand if often the only 'up' winged fly so early on in the year, which makes it very easy to identify.
Warm Day - Trout will be more likely to take hatching Large Dark Olives or fully hatched Duns, so a floating imitation could be your answer.
Cold Day - Floating flies may not work, you will need to check if you can swap to a Nymph this early on in the season.
March Brown Less likely to be seen in the South of England . Loves to live in a fast flowing, stony, rain-fed river. Easy to identify by the 'up' wings so early on in the season. Ideally you would want to look for an established hatch to use the Dry fly variant, keep an eye out around lunch time they tend to be quite brief!
Midges as you probably know are found EVERYWHERE! They can be annoying but are vital for fishing, as all aspects of a Midges lifecycle are a staple diet for fish. To catch an adult Midge, they either have to be 'stillborn' or the fish was lucky as they fly off rather quick after hatching.
Shrimp & Louse The most common of the creatures that Trout will eat, found throughout Rivers & Stillwaters across the UK. Most commonly found in and around weedbeds and in the gravel. Best to have your fly weighted and fish in shallower waters.
