The Grey Drake represents the female dun of Emphemera danica. Nymphs of this species typically live in lakes and fast moving rivers. The ephemera danica typically has a two year life cycle and her main flight period is the end of May through into June but adults are seen from April to November. Once mated, the female releases her eggs by dipping the tip of her abdomen onto the surface of the water. Sometimes she will actually rest on the surface of the water.
The term 'Drake' originates from the feathers used in the wing of this fly. It is tied in a 'fanwing' style.
For the more adventurous among you we have provided tying specifications for the Green Drake Mayfly. Remember at The Essential Fly we sell the Green Drake Mayfly at incredible prices with a top quality fly and service to back it up.
