April almost every fly fisherman will have started their return after the winter break, the last of winter has disappeared and rivers are getting to normality. We see the last of hatches of March Browns in April and on rivers the Pond Olives start to hatch.

Rivers - open season for Brown trout

Notes:

Wild fish will be hungry after a lean winter on rivers with sporadic activity around hatches. Stillwater fisheries show large catches with stocked and grown on fish easily fooled. Used attractors on stillwaters

Nymphs: March Brown nymph (12)  or Waterhen Spider (14)

Dries:  Large Dark Olive (12) or March Brown (14)
Natural Lake & Reservoir Flies Recommended:

Buzzers - green colour works well early season.

Damsel nymphs - always present, fish particularly along the margins

Diawl batch - a great nymphs attractor

Sandy's Assassins - Emergers  - fish on subsurface film as midges hatch as an emerger

Lures for Lake & Reservoir Flies Recommended:

Pulling flies - Viva marabou, Cats Whisker, Humungus. Use Foam Arsed Blobs as suspenders or in washing line rigs

Tactics:

Try a variety of retrieves from a slow figure of eight through to a fast pull. Don't forget trying some short pauses and watch as fish will take right up to the edge of the waters -  It really is a case of finding out what the fish want on the day and can vary day by day in March
