Brown Trout Nymph Fly Patterns

Nymphs make up an amazing part of the Brown Trout's diet. With 80% of the food stuff subsurface it is why when we look over a river or brook we see Brownies dart about from behind rocks grabbing at small food items below the surface.

With Brown Trout we may use a variety of fly patterns, suggestive patterns which may look like food but they do not resemble any nymph found subsurface. Pheasant Tail Nymphs and GRHE fly or Gold Ribbed Hares Ear are the most popular suggestive fly patterns.  alternatively there are the imitative fly patterns. These are fly patterns that look like real nymphs and bugs found below the surface of the water. The Brown Trout WIll be feeding on nymphs which we have  imitative fly patterns for such as mayfly nymphs, march brown nymphs, shrimps or the inevitable Baetis nymphs, the initial nymphs that emerge into Olives of which there are many varieties found in rivers and brooks.
