2014 Best Fly Reels for Stillwaters including Reservoirs, Lochs and Boat Fly Fishing

We were looking at fly reels that would work for dry flies and nymphing, from bank and from boats. We wanted them to match our winning fly rods and work with some of our older fly rods. With fly reels there seemed to be an even larger range than with the rods as each manufacturer has reels from entry level, budget conscious to really expensive reels in this category. Stunning reels like the Wychwood Salt were becoming too specialised and expensive but worthy of a mention.

Wychwood Flow #7/8 Reel in Platinum

Best all Round Fly Reel for Stillwaters Wychwood Flow #7/8 Reel in Platinum

Superb redesign by Wycwood of the Truefly reels with a simple cassette which allows you to swap lines quickly and great value for money took this reel to the top of its class for us. The bundle with an EVA case and two spare reels had us take our floating, midge tip and sinking lines conveniently this year. With a bundle at under £70 we got this reel in matt black, our facvourite, non reflective colour although other colours are available. More Details

The Snowbee Onyx came second place, with 5 to 7 weight it crosses river to stillwater, however we have separate rods and reels for each purpose. With its price higher than the Wychwood that put it into second place for us. Third place was the Wychwood Flow which is an all aluminium reel, very lightweight at 166g for the 7/8 and great value under £40.
