2014 Best Stillwater Leaders and Tippets

With rivers if we use tippets below 0.12mm they are virtually invisible, however as we get onto stillwaters with larger fish the leader and leader strength become more crucial. As we did lots of our testing at Roxholme Trout fishery where the 'babies' weigh 10lb and our biggest fish is over 22lb tippets and tippet development has become an area we look at really seriously. We made our own droppered tapered leaders as the large brands seemed to charge far too much for these products.

Best all Round Leaders & Tippets Seaguar Riverge Grand Max 100m Spools

Leaders have been a huge area of investigation for us this year. Sandy put us onto Riverge Grand Max from Saaguar and we loved it. Seaguar make the worlds strongest fluorocarbon tippet material. Soft Plus is even stronger however the slight stiffness of Grand Max allowed us to cast dries and teams of flies and its strength was incredible. We used this based on diameter not breaking strain. As it is fluorocarbon it is virtually invisible and has become our main tippet material this year.  More Details

Stroft is still a firm favourite, softer and more flexible than Grand Max, additionally ABR is coloured a brown which has worked on dirtier waters. Snowbee fluorocarbon came in 3rd place for us. Slightly cheaper for than Grand Max however just not as strong and for us strength overcame budget here!
